Joint Base McGuire, Dix, Lakehurst:
Having just finished delivering the Dale Carnegie Immersion Seminar (Strictly Business), which is the three day version of the Dale Carnegie Course in Hanger One at Lakehurst, I got to thinking about skills and perceptions.
Attached is a link to video of Marshall Goldsmith explaining that it is not enough to become more skilled at listening, communicating, and demonstrating respect, we have to help people see the change.
In the Broadway musical Wicked we see that Elphaba (the green witch) becomes labeled as “wicked” and then that is all people look for from her. Changing that perception becomes impossible, yet it doesn’t reflect her true personality or intentions. Ultimately, Elphaba gives in to the perception and accepts her fate.
This can happen in the work place, people may see us as disrespectful, or aggressive, when our intention is simply to provide a high quality of work. Changing that perception of us can be challenging. Marshall Goldsmith has some excellent tips on how to do that.
